Step 14 - Sand-fill (if needed)
Fortunately, our nylon turf is dense enough therefore it is rare to need
a large quantity of sub-base material. However, should the design of your
putting green require sand to be used above or on your turf, then here's
what you need to know.
First, cover your cups so they do not fill up with sand. Then with a
lawn fertilizing spreader, fill an appropriate amount of sand into the
device and begin spreading the sand over the turf. After spreading the
sand, brush the spread into the turf with a broom thereby bringing a greater
balance of sand throughout the green. Continue doing this until you have
achieved the desired look and performance of your green. Remember that
it is important to not rush through this stage because an inappropriate
amount of sand can adversely affect the functionality of your green.
With all polypropylene turfs, expect three or four weeks before the fibers
of the turf begin to soften. Some nylon turfs may require this period
of initiation as well. However, through the use of standard garden tools
like a "lawn roller", you can increase the rate of softening
the fibers.
