Step 15 - Finishing the green
There are many unique ways to finish your green with that special final
touch. A variety of techniques can be applied through the manipulation
of soil and vegetation along the edge of your green. By partnering the
aesthetics of the surrounding environment with your putting green, you
can leave the impression that your green was developed by a professional
Fringe
To create a fringe, you could use one of our synthetic turfs or simply
apply sod to the edge of your green. They are both easy to install and
add character to your green.
With sod, just remember to provide extra water until the grass
establishes roots again. You can try applying different types of sod as
this may add to the appeal of your putting green. However, take caution
in selecting certain types of grass. Try to avoid "Bermudas"
as they are known for having stems that fly off with your swing, easily
defiling the green. Just remember that these types of grass will require
more maintenance.
For synthetic turfs, you have the option of adding one of
our fringe materials to the edge of your
green. It is important to plan and ensure that you have enough sub-base
beyond the edge of your green to allow for this installation. The fringe
materials are to be installed and seamed exactly like the putting green
turf. Although this material does not have to be seamed firmly like the
regular turf, it should be set within ¼ of an inch from the turf's edge.
Stone
Stones can be a fantastic way to define the edge of the putting green
area. Since stones are a commonly used, there is always a wide selection
of various sizes and colors.
While determining the positioning of the stones along the edge of the
putting green, ensure that the sloped edges of the green meet the grade.
Next, begin laying vegetation tarp throughout the designated stone positions.
These types of tarps can help prevent the growth of weeds and various
other vegetations. Finally, you are now ready to place your stones around
the edge of your green.
Mulch
Like stones, mulch is an excellent material that is commonly used for
framing properties. Unfortunately when comparing to stones, mulch is much
higher maintenance. Mulch can be easily transferred onto the putting area
by either the swing of a golf club or from someone accidentally dragging
their feet as they walk over it. Also keep in mind that mulch must be
replaced every few months because it is biodegradable. However, despite
these minor setbacks, mulch is still a very popular choice. Most greens
that are installed correctly require very little maintenance. Often, a
leaf blower or small broom will suffice.
Your imagination is the only limit. Consult the creativity within yourself
to produce your dream putting green. Through the design of aesthetically
crafted bunkers, featured stone walls and strategically placed water fountains,
you can truly redefine the experience of putting and chipping within your
own backyard.
