Step 8 - Prepare turf for seams (if
needed)
To prepare the turf for seaming, unroll the turf in a separate location
from the plotted putting green area to avoid disrupting the neatly compacted
sub-base.
IMPORTANT TIP: Should the surface of the sub-base become
damaged, repair the surface so that it remains smooth and compact before
laying down the prepared turf.
After you have finished cutting the rolls of turf to the desired lengths,
bend the edge of the turf backwards so you can begin cutting the seam.
Scrim Back Turf
For scrim back turf, select an area between the tufted rows of material
which is known as a "channel". Creating a proper seam will require
an accurate cut along the channel, which is located between the two edges
of the turf you have selected. Should you accidentally cut into a different
channel, start again and create a new seam by cutting a new channel.
Rubber Backed Turf
For rubber back turf, you will not have "channels" to guide
your cutting therefore it is important to create a straight line before
you begin. From each end of the seam's edge, create a small marking approximately
1 to 2 inches in from the turf fibers. Then with a chalked string, snap
a straight line between the two markings. With your newly created line,
you are now ready to begin cutting.
Make certain that you have a sharp blade. Then from one end, begin cutting
along the new chalk line. After completing the cut, ignore the chalk line
and only use a straight edge tool from this point forward. Now move the
straight edge downwards aligning it with your first cut. This can be best
accomplished by extending the straight edge beyond the first cut by 8
to 10 inches. Simply repeat this step until the edge has been completely
trimmed. Depending on the amount of cutting required, expect to change
your blade as the sharpness will impact the quality of your cuts.
